About Mindful Parenting

ECIN partnered with the Institute for African American Mindfulness (IAAM), Kozmique Light Meditations, Minds Inc., and families from Educare and AppleTree Early Learning Centers in Washington, DC, to develop the curriculum with three levels:
At the individual level, engage caregivers in developing personal mindfulness practices, using evidence-based wellness strategies such as mindfulness meditation and psychological education.
At the family level, bring mindfulness perspectives and skills to the parent-child relationship, creating a safe space for caregivers to explore mental health issues that may support them in seeking clinical services when needed.
At the community level, bring community organizing principles to the practice, building a sense of belonging and confidence for practitioners to advocate for their needs.
Mindful Parenting teaches caregivers to pause, reflect, and respond rather than react using an approach that honors Black and African American cultural wisdom while addressing modern parenting challenges.
VOICES OF PARENT
"It helped me cope with certain things happening in my life, and helped me learn how to use coping skills when I am upset—even simple things like breathing or taking a moment for myself, walking away and revisiting the conversation. It helped me with navigating through tough times in my life."
"We introduced therapy in our lives, and we're not a culture that does that. The mindfulness opened us up to therapy... We decided not to just try to handle it spiritually, as is a tradition in our culture, but because of our mindfulness practices, we decided to do it therapeutically as well, and our granddaughter is thriving."
"I think a lot more before I speak... I try to understand before I respond... and think about the questioner... where they're coming from, their point of view.... Every action doesn't require a reaction on my part. I think that's one of the most important things I learned from mindfulness."

Cultivating Culturally-Grounded Mindfulness Leadership

The ECIN Mindful Parenting program is building a robust pipeline of clinicians, teachers, caregivers, and community leaders who offer culturally-grounded, healing-centered mindfulness support throughout the District of Columbia.

We have already invested in training 12 local mindfulness teachers who are Black, Indigenous, or people of color. Through our partnership with the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP), we're actively working to reduce barriers to entry for meditation teacher training opportunities, particularly for practitioners of color who will serve families in underserved areas of Washington, DC.Our documentation efforts focus on capturing our culturally-grounded teacher training curriculum to facilitate broader dissemination. This work specifically emphasizes approaches that root mindful parenting in Black and African American communities and cultural traditions, honoring ancestral wisdom while incorporating evidence-based practices.

By expanding our network of trained practitioners who reflect the communities they serve, we aim to create sustainable, accessible mindfulness resources that respect cultural contexts and promote healing across generations throughout the District.
